Using flanges adds flexibility when maintaining piping systems by allowing for easier disassembly and improved access to system components.
A typical flanged connection is comprised of three parts: Pipe Flanges, Gasket and Bolting
In most cases, there are specific gasket and bolting materials made from the same, or approved materials as the piping components you wish to connect. Stainless Steel flanges are some of the most common. However, flanges are available in a wide range of materials so matching them with your needs is essential. Other common flange materials include Monel, Inconel, Chrome Moly, and many others depending on the application. The best option for your needs will depend on both the system in which you intend to use the flange and your specific requirements.
Flanges are not a one-type-fits-all sort of solution. Sizing aside, matching the ideal flange design to your piping system and intended usage will help to ensure reliable operation, a long service life, and optimal pricing. Here’s a look at the most common flange types available.
THREADED FLANGES
Also known as a screwed flange, this style has a thread inside the flange bore which fits with the matching male thread on the pipe or fitting. The threaded connection means you can avoid welding in many use cases. Simply match the threading to the pipes you wish to connect.
SOCKET-WELD FLANGES
Ideal for smaller pipe diameters in low-temperature and low-pressure scenarios, socket-weld flanges feature a connection in which you place the pipe into the flange and then secure the connection with a single multi-pass fillet weld. This makes this style simpler to install than other welded flange types while avoiding the limitations associated with threaded ends.
Slip-on flanges are very common and are available in a large range of sizes to accommodate systems with higher flow rates and throughput. Simply match the flange to the outer diameter of the pipe you intend to connect. Installation is slightly more technical as you’ll need fillet weld both sides to secure the flange to the pipe.
LAP JOINT FLANGES
Featuring a two-piece design, lap joint flanges require butt welding of the stub end to the pipe or fitting with the use of a backing flange to create the flanged connection. This design makes this style popular for use in systems with limited physical space or systems which require frequent dismantling and maintenance.
Like lap joint flanges, weld neck flanges require butt welding for installation. However, their integrity, performance in systems with multiple repeat bends, and the ability to use them in high-pressure and high-temperature systems make them a leading choice for process piping.
Used for terminating or isolating piping systems, blind flanges are essentially boltable blank discs. When installed properly and combined with the correct gaskets, they can achieve an outstanding seal which is easy to remove when needed.
SPECIALTY FLANGES
The flange types listed above are the most common. However, there is a range of additional specialized flange types available to suit a range of uses and environments. Other options include nipoflanges, weldoflanges, expanding flanges, orifice, long weld neck, forged flange, big size flange, high pressure flange and reducing flanges.

NICKEL 200
Commercially pure (99.6%) wrought nickel with good mechanical properties and resistance to a range of corrosive media. Good thermal, electrical and magnetostrictive properties. Used for variety of processing equipment, particularly to maintain product purity in handling foods, synthetic fibers and alkalies. Standard products forms are round, flats, pipe, tube, plate, sheet, forging stock, strip and wire.
NICKEL 201
Commercially pure (99.6%) wrought nickel essentially the same as Nickel 200 but with a lower carbon content to prevent embrittlement by integranular carbon temperatures over 600 of (3015oC). Lower carbon content also reduces hardness making Nickel 201 particularly suitable for cold-formed items. Standard product forms are round, flats, pipe, tube, plate, sheet, forging stock, Strip and wire.
MONEL ALLOY 400
A nickel-copper alloy with high strength and excellent corrosion resistance in a range of media including sea water hydrofluoric, chemical and hydrocarbon processing equipment, valves, pumps, shafts, fitting, fasteners and heat exchangers. Standard product forms are round, hexagon, flats, forging stock, pipe, tube, plate, sheet, strip and wire.
MONEL ALLOY K-500
Corrision-hardenable nickel-copper alloy that combines on resistance of Monel alloy 400 with greater hardness. It also has low permeability and is to under -150°F (-101°C). Used for pump shafts, and value instruments, doctor blades and scrapers, trim, fasteners, and marine propeller shafts. Product forms are round, hexagon, flats, forging tube, plate, sheet, strip and wire.
INCONEL ALLOY 600
A nickel-chromium alloy with good oxidation resistance at high temperatures and resistance to chloride-ion stress corrosion cracking corrosion by high-purity water and causing corrosion. Used for furnace components, in chemical and food processing, in nuclear engineering and for sparking electrodes. Standard product forms are round, hexagon, extruded section, flats, forging stock, pipe, tube, plate, sheet, strip and wire.
INCONEL ALLOY 601
A nickel-chromium alloy with an addition of aluminum for out standing resistance to oxidation and other forms of high temperature corrosion. It also has high mechanical properties at elevated temperatures. Used for industrial furnaces; heat-treating equipment such as baskets, muffles and retorts; petrochemical and other process equipment; and gas-turbine components. Standard product forms are round, flats, forging stock, pipe, tube, plate, sheet, strip and wire.
INCONEL ALLOY 625
A nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy with an addition of niobium that acts with the molybdenum to stiffen the alloy’s matrix and thereby provide high strength without a strengthening heat treatment. The alloy resists a wide range of severely corrosive environments and is especially resistant to pitting and crevice corosion. Used in chemical processing, aerospace and marine engineering, pollution control equipment and nuclear reactor. INCOLOY ALLOY 825
A nickel-chromium alloy with additions of molybdenum and copper. It has excellent resistance to both reducing and oxidizing acids to stress corrosion cracking and to localized attack such as pitting arocrevice corrosion. The alloy is especially resistant to sulfuric and phosphoric acids. Used for chemical processing, pollution-control equipment, oil and gas well piping, nuclear fuel reprocessing, acid production and pickling equipment. INCOLOY ALLOY 800
A nickel-iron-chromium alloy with good strength and excellent resistance to oxidation and carburization in high temperature atmospheres. It also resists corrosion by many aqueous environments. The alloy maintains a stable, austenitic structure during prolonged exposure to high temperatures. Used for process piping, heat exchangers, carburizing equipment heating-element sheathing, and nuclear steam-generator tubing. Standard product forms are round, flats, forging stock, pipe, tube, plate, strip and wire.
INCOLOY ALLOY 800HT
A nickel-iron-chromium alloy having the same basic composition as INCOLOY alloy 800 but with significantly jigher creep-rupture strength. The higher strength results from close control of the carbon, aluminium and titanium contents in conjunction with a higher-temperature anneal. Used in chemical and petrochemical processing in power plants for super heater and reheater tubing in industrial furncaces and for heat-treating equipment, Standard product forms are round, flats, forging stock, pipe, tube, plate, strip and wire.
HASTALLOY C 22
(UNS N06022; W. Nr. 2,4602; NiCr21Mo14W) is a fully austenitic advanced temperatures. This alloy provides exceptional resistance to general corrosion, pitting, crevice corrosion, chemical/petrochemical processing, pollution control (flue gas desulfurization), power, marine, pulp and paper processing, and waste disposal industries. HASTALLOY C-276
A nickel-molyoaenum-chromium alloy with an addition of tungsten having excellent corrosion resistance in a wide range of severe environments. The high molybdenum content makes the alloy especially resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion. The low carbon content minimizes carbide precipitation during welding to maintain corrosion resistance in as welded structures. SMO – 254
Avesta Sheffield 254 SMO is an austenitic stainless steel which due to its high molybdenum content possesses very high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. The steel grade was developed by Avesta Sheffield for use in halide-containing environments such as seawater. 254 SMO also shows good resistance to uniform corrosion and, especially in acids containing halides, this steel grade is superior to conventional stainless steels.
254 SMO is registered trademark of Avesta Sheffield AB.
The high levels of molybdenum in particular but also of chromium and nitrogen endow 254 SMO with extremely good resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. The addition of copper provides improved resistance in certain acids. Furthermore, due to its relatively high nickel content in combination with the high levels of chromium and molybdenum 254 SMO possesses good resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
ALLOY – 904L
904L is a non-stabilised low carbon high alloy austenitic stainless steel. The addition of copper to this grade gives it greatly improved resistance to strong reducing acids, particularly sulphuric acid. It is also highly resistant to chloride attack – both pitting / crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking.
ALLOY – 20
Alloy 20 is one of the so-called “super” stainless steels that was designed for maximum resistance to acid attack. It’s nickel, chromium, molybdenum and copper content contribute to its overall resistance to chlorideon stress corrosion cracking and general pitting attack. The alloy is stabilized with columbium to minimize carbide precipitation during welding. It has good mechanical properties and can be fabricated with comparative ease. Although the alloy was designed for use in sulfuric acid related industries, it finds wide usage throughout the chemical processing industry. It also is used for processing pharmaceuticals, food, gasonline, solvents, plastics, explosives, synthetic fibres and many other products.
STAINLESS STEEL 304
The most popular stainless steel has an economic balance of alloying elements to ensure its good cold formability, corrosion resistance, toughness and good mechanical properties with no excessive work-hardening. It performs well in unpolluted atmosphere but can tarnish or lightly rust in damp atmospheres around some industrial and on/offshore locations. The steel has been used extensively for potable water tubing and in fresh feedwater systems where precautions are taken to avoid crevice attack under deposits, etc. performance in aerated seawater is not good without adequate galvanic or cathodic protection. Stability and toughness at cryogenic temperatures is high.
STAINLESS STEEL 304H
TP 304H with guaranteed carbon content of min. 0,04% which gives a better creep resistance. Similar oxidation resistance to TP 304. Main applications: Heat exchangers, chemical and petrochemical furnaces.
STAINLESS STEEL 304L
Low carbon version of TP 304 guaranteed no creep resistance above 500 C. good high temperature oxidation resistance up to 900°C. General corrosion characteristics are similar to TP 304. Stability and toughness at cryogenic temperatures is high. Main applications: Pipe and heat exchanger tubes in chemical, petrochemical and food industries.
STAINLESS STEEL 316
This is one of the family of 17% CR 12-13% Ni steels containing Mo of 2,0-2,4% stabilized with Ti which minimizes chromium carbide precipitation and improves resistance to intergranular corrosion. In the damp industrial or coastal atmospheres of Europe, they.
STAINLESS STEEL 316L
These grades belong to the family of 17% Cr 12-13% Ni steels containing 2,0.3,0%Mo. This standard grade is used where specific attributes of other members of the family are not necessary – eg. no likehood of intercrystalline corrosion caused by wedding. Special for TP 316L, low carbon content, minimizes chromium carbide precipitation and improves resistance to intercrystalline corrosion. After TP 304/304L type steels, these TP 316/316/L grades are the most widely used austenitics. Good high temperature oxidation resistance upto 900°C. In the damp industrial or onshore atmospheres of Europe, they perform better than TP 304/304L and ferritic grades. In low temperature seawater they offer limited resistance to pitting but are susceptible to crevice attack. Their short and long time properties at elevated temperatures are also superior to those of comparable TP 304/304L grades. Main application: Pipe and heat exchanger tubes in chemical and petrochemical plant, in boilers and food industry.
STAINLESS STEEL 316H
This grade with guaranteed carbon content of min. 0,04% enhances strength at elevated temperatures. Similar oxidation resistance to TP 316. Main applications: heat exchangers, furnaces, chemical and petrochemical plant.
STAINLESS STEEL 321
High carbon steel prone more to intercrystalline attack in weld zones and slower cooling sections. These steel avoids such attacks through its stabilization with Ti. The corrosion behavior of this alloy in natural environments is very similar to the TP 304/304L alloys. Architecturally, it may not be adequate for near-industrial or onshore locations in Europe. Satisfactory in many low-chloride water, it is prone to pitting or crevice corrosion in seawater. Water treatment, galvanic protection and deaeration can influence the performance.
STAINLESS STEEL 321 H
This is the high carbon version of TP 321 which ensures great creep resistance. Behaves much the same as TP 321 in oxidation resistance. Main applications: heat exchangers, furnaces, boilers in chemical and petrochemical plant.
UNS S31803
A widely used duplex steel combining high strength and corrosion resistance in various organic acids, unorganic acids, aggressive coolingwaters and hydrous H2S/NaCl mixtures. With a near equal mix of austenite and ferrite, they give yield strength 30% higher and tensile strengths marginally higher than comparable nitrogen-containing austenitics. High resistance to general corrosion and specifically to pitting and crevice corrosion. Their resistance to stress-corrosion cracking in neutral chlorides is superior to that of the austenities. In high chloride acidic or moderately sour environments where hydrogen or sulphide stress cracking is more likely, higher alloyed austenitics need also to be considered. Impact values are high and transition temperatures of base materials vary around 50°C. However, the proportion and orientation of ferrite in welds and base materials may significantly affect toughness at subzero temperatures. Exposures to moderate and high temperatures and less rapid cooling may cause embrittlement.
UNS S32760
UNS S32760 (TSD2507) is a super ferritic-austenitic grade with high mechanical properties and superior corrosion resistance. Besides the ferritic-austemitic structure, TSD2507 has an excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion and is therefore particularly suitable for sea water applications and for process systems on offshore platforms, respectively in all situations where there is a risk of stress corrosion. The high tensile properties are twice comparing with TP 316 L stainless steel. The service range is between -50°C up to +275°C.
